University Presidents?

Recommended Posts

If so, I imagine they belong in the "Arrogant Academics" thread.

Rant vs Doug Stanhope death pool BS aside---(they won't recognize university Presidents as 'celebrity' enough)--- the next two who should perish are the former Presidents of Towson State Univ and Creighton University. Both have been given the 'months to live' speech from their prospective physicians.

A president of my own alma mater, the Free University of Berlin, has died at 90: Eberhard Lämmert:

http://www.tagesspiegel.de/wissen/zum-tod-des-germanisten-eberhard-laemmert-ein-diplomat-der-literatur/11730046.html

The Free University was originally founded as an academic connection to the United States, as a counterweight to the Humboldt University which was situated in communist East Berlin. Things got a little complicated with the student protests of 1968 and their decidely anti-american sentiment after the Vietnam War. The Free University was a center of the student protests and experienced heavy ideological conflicts which continued for a couple of years as Germany went through the terror attacks of the Red Army Faction. Then there was the Yom Kippur War, the oil crisis and other things that made the 70s a difficult time... but with Mr. Lämmert's presidency (1976-1983) things calmed down. Mr. Lämmert, like the current president, was a german philogist, by the way.

Well I've delivered on one of my two promises.

Maravene Loeschke, the former Towson University president who was recalled for her years in theater and as a mentor to students, died Thursday at Gilchrist Hospice Care. She was 68 and had been diagnosed with adrenal cancer last year.

Another person linked to the fake doctors Vyapam scam in India, Dr Arun Sharma, Dean of a Jabalpur medical college, has been found dead.

http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-jabalpur-medical-college-dean-with-links-to-vyapam-scam-accused-found-dead-2101901

The burnt down body of another Dean of the same medical college Dr DK Sakalle, who was reportedly looking into fake admissions in the medical college in the wake of MPPEB (Vyapam) scam, was found in his home on July 4 last year.

A journalist working for a news channel had mysteriously died yesterday after having interviewed the parents of a girl who had been found dead near railway tracks after her name figured in the Vyapam scam.

At least 25 accused and witnesses have died so far in the Vyapam scam, a massive admission and recruitment racket involving several bureaucrats and politicians, and the opposition Congress has been demanding a CBI probe into the matter.

This comes just a day after a journalist covering the case was found dead under mysterious circumstances. Something smells rotten in Denmark India.

University presidents are usually the most revered experts in the given field. You may find their obits in magazines such as Science, Nature etc., definitely not in Sun....

I caught this one trying to escape! Obit from July....

Former Cornerstone University President Dr. Walter Wilbert Welch died Thursday morning at the age of 97.

Welch is credited with transforming the school from a small Bible college into the four-year, accredited university it is today.

(Having grown up in Michigan I'm aware of this small school unheard of beyond a 500-mile radius.)

Former university president of Creighton University and the University of San Francsisco, Rev. John Schlegel, dead at 75 of pancreatic cancer.

http://www.wowt.com/home/headlines/Former-Creighton-President-Rev-John-P-Schlegel-Passes-Away--350243661.html

He's the second of my two university president predictions this year, he lasted longer than I anticipated. Somehow I can't find my posts about him here but I'm certain they were made.

BOISE - Dr. John Keiser, the man widely credited for bringing Boise State University into the modern era, has passed away.

He became Boise State's president in 1978 and for the next 13 years, under his watch, the Broncos won a national football championship, BSU built what is now Taco Bell Arena, the Morrison Center, the Student Union Building, and the Technology Center. He was 79.

Far be it from me to criticise American education, it brings the US remarkable sport success, but shouldn´t a uni prez promote academic things? That Technology Center may be that, but the rest ain't.

I feel like if she's the incumbent there maaaaay be a chance she'd even make the Mail's AP Wires. Mostly going by the precedent of Elson Floyd getting a shout there.

St. Bonaventure University President Sister Margaret Carney says she received a diagnosis of cancer days after announcing her decision to retire. The 74-year-old said in January that she will leave her position at the western New York university on July 31. She’s been at the Franciscan college for 20 years and has been president for the last 12. Carney says that she’s started drug therapy for multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.
